Hello/Konnichiwa, My name is Fia and I am looking for a dedicated independent tutor for private, 1-on-1 Japanese lessons online. I am an absolute beginner with zero prior knowledge of the language. My main goal is to learn the basics correctly from the start, including reading, basic grammar, and useful daily conversation. However, my grammar knowledge is very lacking compared to my other skills (vocab, kanji) and I would say there are even still many N3 grammar points I don’t know well. I am looking for N2 preparation with a focus on grammar (I may need to learn some N3 level grammar too). Outside of JLPT- focused goals, I would also like to improve my output skills because I do not really have the opportunity to use Japanese much at work. I’d like to do speaking practice and improve my ability to formulate and present arguments smoothly and logically. When speaking Japanese, I find I often default to the easier thing to say rather than what I truly want to say (which would require more detail) and I want to work to reduce that. I also want to practice writing (perhaps short compositions), like my impressions of media I read or watch. I have a total of over eight years of speaking, writing, and learning Japanese. However, I want to improve on, my confidence with speaking, which is very uncomfortable for me at times. My name is Kevin Zhang, and I am a working professional in my mid-thirties from Canada with a strong interest in learning Japanese language and culture. My primary goals are personal: I would love to travel in Japan and communicate with locals in a respectful and meaningful way. Being able to enjoy Japanese television shows and video games in their original language would also be a wonderful bonus. I may eventually work toward taking the JLPT exams as a way to measure my progress and for personal growth, rather than for professional purposes. Over the past year, I have been studying Japanese independently and have worked through both Genki I and Genki II. I also regularly listen to Japanese podcasts and try to immerse myself in the language through Japanese shows and video games. I did purchase Quartet and the updated Tobira intermediate level books, but have not yet worked through them. I was born in China and moved to Canada when I was a child. Although my Chinese reading and writing are not especially strong, my familiarity with Chinese characters has been helpful when reading the general meaning of Japanese kanji. However, since I have been studying independently without opportunities to practise with a speaking partner or teacher, I have found listening comprehension and speaking in real- life situations to be particularly challenging. These are the areas I would most like to improve. I will be staying in Sendai from November 12 to December 11, 2026, and I am very interested in taking intensive, in-person Japanese lessons during my stay. Ideally, I would love to study for approximately two hours per session, four to five times per week, if your schedule permits. |
